About The Project
The renovation of the E.Y. Library & Learning Center at Black Hills State University entailed completely remodeling the existing library building and adding a second level addition above the main entrance.
The second-floor addition is supported by drilled piers and is completely open at the main level, which allows for continued use of the original entrance. The existing concrete pan joist floor was opened up in several locations to add a new elevator shaft and a new, open, steel-framed grand staircase up to the second floor, as well as to allow revising several of the existing stair paths.
In the second-floor addition, the use of steel framing allows most of the exterior walls to be curtain wall glass, permitting an abundance of natural light to permeate the building. Most of the existing buildings windows were enlarged to full-height storefront windows that bring additional light into the original areas of the building.
