About The Project
The Summit Arena is a 250,000-SF arena attached to the existing Rushmore Plaza Civic Center. It has seating for 12,500 spectators and can accommodate a variety of different venues, including entertainment, rodeos and stock shows, and sporting events. The structural design dealt with many challenges: an efficient long-span structure, deep foundations due to poor soil conditions, construction into a hill with an active street above, complex construction sequencing, and the need for early structural packages so that major construction activities could begin prior to the completion of the design by many of the other disciplines. The project was delivered using a Construction Manager at Risk (CMR) process. Albertson Engineering Inc. provided detailed reviews of the construction estimates provided by the CMR at multiple stages throughout the de-sign to continually track project costs, and we provided recommendations to the CMR regarding the cost of structural items.
